New Exhibition - Duck Stamps and Prints

Our wetlands are in danger nationwide, threatening the existence of the waterfowl and other wildlife species that inhabit them. Over 100 million acres of national wetlands property have been destroyed already and that number increases by 300,000 annually. In response to this crisis, the federal government undertook a project to increase awareness and raise funds to reclaim and preserve wetlands areas. Artists who specialized in wildlife painting were engaged to produce images of waterfowl in their natural habitat that could be reproduced in prints. The prints, sold in sets with matching stamps, were then sold to the public and the revenues generated from these sales were applied to the preservation of wetland areas. The first federal duck stamps and prints were published in 1934 and, for many, complete sets of each stamp and print are among the most coveted wildlife collectibles.
The conservation of wildlife habitat is recognized as a state as well as a federal responsibility so, as a result of the popularity and success of the federal program, many states began initiating their own duck stamp and print projects in the early 1970s. Here in New Jersey, the Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife created such a program in 1984. An eight member waterfowl advisory committee comprised of representatives from a wide variety of wildlife and nature organizations is the guiding force and is responsible for selecting the design and for overseeing the purchase of land.
Approximately 10,000 waterfowl print and stamp sets are produced each year. Beautiful as well as valuable, the prints appeal to collectors, investors and outdoor enthusiasts interested in preserving the wetlands and their inhabitants. The first duck stamp and print sets have risen close to $3 million to preserve nearly 9,000 acres of wetlands. Indirectly, due to cooperative efforts, an additional 40,000 acres have been protected.
